Boats are either 12V or 24V depending on the system and size of the boat. Prudent owners would have one set for starting the engine, a second set for the boat's electrical.


Boats have 24V emergency batteries and usually low maintenance lead acid batteries as they are cheaper than the more esoteric ones. On an FPSO (floating production facility), they are kept in air-conditioned rooms to extend their life, as their life is greatly reduced at ambient temperatures above 25C. Not only is having to replace 72 tons of batteries expensive, but the mechanical handling routes for all of them to the point where they can be unloaded takes some effort (plus changing 72 tons) and the boat to deliver/collect them costs a fortune at sea. Space conditioning is much cheaper and the batteries should last a field life. These batteries on ships and at sea are intended to power emergency systems and UPSs that keep control systems running in the event of a shutdown at sea. They are usually rated for at least 18 hours of emergency power. Under normal circumstances, they are charged by the main bus.
